The goal of this project was to create a mold of an existing object. I decided to use a frog toy because it would have a fun split line and included intricate details and specific patterns and textures. To create the first half of the silicone mold, I fit the frog into a clay block and molded the surface to fit the desired split line and used a chopstick to poke four alignment holes in the corners. I then fit the clay half into a foam core box and poured silicone on top. After this silicone set, I removed the two halves and placed the silicone half in the bottom of the foam core box with the frog in its place and a clay cylinder on top of the frog's back. Another layer of silicone was poured over and allowed to set. After both halves were completed, they were aligned and banded together. Using a funnel, an epoxy resin was poured into the mold. A degassing chamber was used to ensure the resin reached all the small features, including the toes and eyes. The epoxy was then allowed to set. Once the resin casting was removed, the fill channel cylinder was chopped off to smooth out the frog's back.
